GAITHERSBURG, MD - (January 24, 2019) The coldest weather in over a decade is expected in the Midwest next week as the polar vortex plunges southward toward the Great Lakes. Temperatures are expected to break daily records as an Arctic airmass settles in, with wind chill values potentially reaching life-threatening levels. The forecast has Chicago seeing its low temperature drop to -18°F on January 31, which would be the city’s coldest temperature since 2009. In addition, the forecast high of -5°F on January 30 would be Chicago’s coldest high since 1996. Other cities in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest brace for lows in the -20s and -30s with wind chill values as cold as -50s in Minnesota.

“The upcoming chill is expected to reach or exceed levels from the 2014 polar vortex intrusion in much of the Midwest,” says Steve Silver, Senior Meteorologist at Radiant Solutions. “We expect the cold to set records in the Upper Midwest, and some models suggest that there still may be room for the forecast to trend additionally colder.” While not as extreme as the Midwest chill, temperatures are also expected to turn very cold in the East with lows dropping into the single digits from Boston to New York and into the teens as far south as Atlanta late next week.
